In this case, you only have to be concerned with the subscript --> H3PO4 Oxygen (O) has a subscript of 4 - indicating that there are 4 oxygen atoms. If this had been a reaction that required balancing (and coefficients) you would have had to take the coefficients into consideration. For example: 2 H3(PO4)+ 3 Ba(CO3) = Ba3(PO4)2 + 3 H2O + 3 CO2 In this example, there are 8 oxygen atoms from the phosphate (PO4) because you have a coefficient of 2 in front of the H3PO4. The coefficient applies to all of the atoms within the compound H3PO4. There are another 9 oxygen atoms from the carbonate (CO3) compound, taking into consideration the coefficient 3 in front of the Ba(CO3). Total oxygens on the left 8 + 9 = 17. There are also 17 oxygens on the right - that's because it's a balanced equation. On the right, you get 8 oxygens from the PO4, 3 from H2O, and 6 from CO2. I hope I helped. :)

A function can have no more than ONE output (y) value for each input (x) value. If it had more than one, it wouldn't pass the vertical line test.

I can only see one chemical formula .. with 4 oxygen atoms in it. H3P04 .. 3 Hydrogen .. 1 Phosphorus .. 4 Oxygen .. it's Phosphoric Acid
