There are several problems which could stop the car getting into gear. However the "clutch slipping" which you describe - where the engine revs with little or no acceleration - can only be caused by wear to the clutch disc, and so a replacement clutch will be required.

Sounds like your clutch needs replacing. Adjusting the cable might improve things slightly, but not for long. Get it checked, as a knackered clutch is not a job you can put off. If the cable had broken, then there would be hardly any resistance when you pressed the clutch pedal down (because it wouldn't be doing anything), you would not have any sensation of biting point, or any sort of connection.
