Spot reduction won't work. Exercises for your abs will build muscle, but you need to do cardio to burn the fat off (also make sure your diet is in check). You won't get a 6 pack from just doing crunches. Cardio will burn fat from your entire body, not just one body part. To get the best results, you need to focus on building muscle for every body part. That means lifting for other body parts (chest, legs, abs, biceps, triceps, etc) and doing cardio too. Also, Ab work will actually slim down your waist, not make it bigger.
