Shay is a boy name. Recently in America, people have started using it for girls, but in terms of history and etymology, Shay is an Irish boy name - a spelling variation of Shea which is a diminuitive of Sheamus (the Irish form of James). People can prefer it for girls if they like but it's still masculine.

Some people call me Shay as a nickname for Shannon and I'm a girl....although Shannon can be a boys name so I would guess Shay could be used for a guy too. Personally I think both Shannon and Shay are pretty feminine though lol.
