I think just telling them that it's just an earring is fine. I personally don't remember anything what my teachers/peers said when I was in preschool so it's not like what you tell them will be a life changing moment.

Children are often satisfied with the simplest answers. Just stick to the facts about it. Tell them that you ears are bigger b/c you used special earrings to make them that way. If they ask what the earrings are, tell them they are earrings that make your ears bigger. There is no need to go into much detail. They will be ok with just about anything you tell them.

You could have everyone go around and look at each others ears. This would be a good learning exercise. Some earlobes are attached and others are not. I am referring to the cartilage in everyone's earlobes. Check out the link below. They show two ears that are attached and unattached.
