Re-set the stone in a new setting. It's really not that expensive. Some jewelers will let you trade in the ring for a new ring, at quite a good price. Maybe wait a bit longer with this one, just to make sure.

I think you are right to have doubts about giving the ring to her, As you said its not bought with her in mind remember the day you bought it spending the time to save for it, going there and picking the ring out thinking if she going to love it to planing the first proposal it a symbol of the other woman get it out of your life!

Have the diamond re-set.......to give the new gal the old gal's e-ring is just plain tacky....sell the old setting to help offset the cost of the new setting-some jewelers will give you a reduced rate on the new setting if you 'trade in' the old...... .
