What you want to do is duplicate the displays. Look in your Windows display settings for modifying the desktop. You can also try the laptop feature to switch monitors. You have to press the Fn (function) key and another key with an icon that looks like a monitor on it to switch between the available displays.

With you using XP, it is difficult to say what all you have available. My laptop I can send my laptop screen out to a projector, aka the TV. Many times it is function +F8

There are two dual monitor settings in the graphics properties (right click your screen) menu. One is a span, that streaches your display across two screens, the other sets it to send the same picture to more than one monitor. This is clearly detailed in the properties menu, if you only read what is there. You have spanned, rather than duplicated, your screen.
