Nope it doesn't cost money unless you download apps that are not free.

No it doesn't. You can hook it up with your credit card so you can purchase apps though.

1. The Apple ID itself is free. 2. If you're sending messages over a wi-fi network, then you don't have to pay anything. 3. If you're sending messages over a mobile phone network, you're subject to whatever fees and plan you have selected for your mobile network service. But that doesn't really have to do with Apple and is a general rule of thumb, anyway.

No the Apple ID itself does not cost money. Apple ID's can however have credit added to them (from an iTunes card, or a debit card). But simply creating the Apple ID will not cost you any money. :D
