I'm not positive that Amazon works this way, but my B&N Nook account uses gift cards first. There should be some explanation on your Amazon account, but my guess is they automatically use up the gift card first.

I have had that happen, too. Make sure you are logged in to the right account.

Yes - I believe if it an item that gift balance can be applied to, Amazon will use it. Some items sold by other stores via Amazon might not accept gift balance as payment.

Carly, I was in a similar situation earlier this year - Amazon does allow you the choice of whether to use your gift card balance. However, your gift card balance is by default set to be used unless you de-select it in favor of using another method of payment. It could have happened during any transaction since you added the gift card, that either you or your mother may have forgotten to de-select using your gift card balance. In your Amazon account, you can see a list of the transactions to which your gift card balance was applied (Click on Your Account, then scroll down and under Gift Cards section click on View Gift Card Balance, then scroll down to Gift Card Activity).
