The same rental laws apply, but the ownership laws differ. If you are the tenant, and weren't notified, the new owner must be honoring the original lease, thus has no interest in letting you leave. It is very common to buy investment property already with renters in place. It would be logical that you were notified even if simply to inform you where and to whom to send the rent.
