If living together is going to create problems, those problems will exist whether or not there is a ring involved and you are much better off finding out beforehand. I think it's ridiculous to suggest that it could potentially ruin the chances of a successful marriage. Sounds more like something a religious fanatic made up.

No. I think more would fail. Also, living separately would defeat the purpose of getting married. If you aren't sharing a home you aren't completely sharing a life.
