Yes, to an extent. Some people enjoy just sitting in their house to watch a movie, all comfy.... And saving money. But you can't get rid of that feeling when you go to the movies, get a huge bucket of popcorn with a soft drink. The insanely huge screen with really loud speakers... It's a totally different environment. Yes it's hurting sales but maybe if the theaters weren't charging $7.00 for a drink, more people would go.

Speaking for myself, it has to be an exceptional movie to get me to the theatre. Otherwise I wait to play it on the big screen with home theatre sound which I can play as loud as I want.

I just spotted this article that says ticket sales are reaching record breaking levels despite some real stinker films like "After Earth", "RIPD", "Lone Ranger". http://movies.yahoo.com/news/6-box-office-aways-record-hits-flops-022251902.html
