I have received (and sent) manuscript letters of thanks and condolence - not things that can appropriately dealt with in an e-mail or an SMS text. You can't beat the personal touch in such situations.

I rarely write letters. I think the last one I wrote was about two years ago, to a friend who asked me for a hand-written letter. She loved it. :) She has sent me a few in the past few years (she's a good writer). We 'play around' with words ~ it's just a sort of game we have. (I've never even met her in person.) We have a 'code language'. We can even post things online that no one else but myself and her can really 'get'. I do write letters by hand to companies, because I have a disability which affects my voice, so I'd rather just write them a letter than call and try to talk to a customer service rep. That has worked OK, but the response is, of course, a computer-printed letter to me.
