Usually people like a good mix of seriousness with the side kick type guy being the comic relief. As for some of the stories I write, I have had a very shy character be cousins or close friends with a very up beat, hyper, mischievous character. I've also had a troubled character be friends with another troubled character and a innocent character. Basically I just ask myself how I want my main character and then I ask myself, what kind of friends do I think that character would have. Usually I come up with one thing (like a hobby or a thought/feeling) about the main characters friend or second main character and just run with it. Sometimes not knowing what you want to write them as is fun because you come up with more ideas to write about and sometimes you don't like it and change it. Sorry if THIS makes no sense. But hope it helps in someway.

its your book , your story....there are books with total of 2 characters and there are those too with more than 80 important characters...so that depends on the story and your notion of it....and just try to avoid cliches , they work as slow poison

If you have writers block, don't expect strangers on the internet to write your story for you. This isn't the advice you want but it's the ins you need. Get up, get some fresh air, blank your mind and find inspiration. It's no-one's story but yours.
