They are both excellent cameras and either would fill your bill very well. Here are some advantages of each. http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-70D-vs-Nikon-D7100 As you can see, one has one advantage (like the flip out screen of the 70D) and the other has its advantage (like the IQ of the D7100). While any DSLR has its challenges for a beginner, neither of these pose a special challenge for you. As for others to consider, the Sony SLT A77 and Pentax K-3 come to mind.

You should handle them, and look at the Pentax K-50 while you're at it. You'll save money at the expense of video performance with the older (but still readily available) Pentax K-30, the cheapest weather-sealed DSLR on the market. Both use the same (Sony) sensor as the Nikon.

Whichever you like best.

Toss a coin. Both very good cameras which will be recommended by Canon and Nikon users. My preference would be the Canon, but it really doesn't matter which one I like! You should study the features of each one and decide which are important to YOU. It's your choice and will be an investment for many years to come, so make sure it's what you want and need.

You really need to do your own research and not depend upon a bunch of strangers to spend your money for you. Start by visiting the Nikon and Canon websites and look at the features both cameras have. Next visit DP Review and read the professional reviews of those cameras Then visit DXOmark to compare the sensor performance (link below) Finally, visit a proper camera shop and hold both cameras in your hands. If you do these things, you will know which camera is best for you, NOT us

There isn't a right or wrong answer to your question... There is a better way to approach what you are trying to do...you're asking for an opinion here on 2 different cameras and you haven't given any background into why it's between these 2 cameras. My advice would be to go back to the beginning...pop into a camera store and explain to a salesman that you are just gathering some info to help you make your mind up what type of camera or camera would be best to buy for this trip that you're going on next year...that takes the pressure off, the salesperson will spend a bit of time chatting to you and help you work out which models suit your needs and match your budget... Both the cameras you are asking about are great cameras...either one would be a decent purchase...just to demonstrate that I actually know what i'm talking about the D7100 has twin SD slots and the Canon 70D doesn't...each camera has it's own Pro's and Cons only you could decide which one suits you best. Since you need help to work that out...pop in to a local camera store and use the opportunity to actually handle the cameras...how a camera feels, handles and operates is a big influence on whether you would actually enjoy using it. I actually reckon a less expensive camera might be all you need...that's why I think it's best to do more research.
