You should Google about that nocturnal tribe they discovered in Africa a few years back. They never went out during the day, and were very deficient in vitamin D. Their children didn't start walking until they were 4 years old or older. It was really interesting.

Ofcourse you can survive. At most, you would eventually suffer from minor ailments, and probably some varying forms of deficiencies, but you wouldn't 'die' from them.

Its possible to survive without sunlight however you could not survive without the vitamins that occur in sunlight such as, as you said, vitamin d. And your characters would need to take pills, or have injections of vitamin d to survive. Alternatively, if the people have been underground for several generations, perhaps they may have evolved to live without it, and have grown accustomed to the dark. Yo could also include some evolutionary mutations due to the darkness such as heightened senses and an inability to see when in light or such. I hope ive sufficiently helped :)

You would eventually starve because the plants (much of your food) would die. There would be no industry to speak of. Where would they get the vitamin D? When our sun finally burns out, it will all be over.

They'd have to take 2000 - 4000 international units of vitamin D3 daily to keep their immune systems healthy. It's also good for people who don't get enough vitamin D in the winter.
