The Wii U can play Wii games just fine. The Wii U just uses discs much like the Wii does. The only thing the Wii U can't do is play Gamecube games. So yes, you can have a Wii U without the Wii. I wasn't too entirely sure what you were asking, so I hope that I answered it.

Wii U is Nintendo's new system. Like the PS4 is Sony's new system. The tablet controller is just a controller. Not the system itself. Wii U comes with the console, gamepad controller, console and gamepad stands, HDMI and power cables, and a game (Mario, Skylanders, and Zelda bundle out now). You won't need your original Wii if you get a Wii U because Wii U is backward compatible, so it plays all Wii games, controllers, and accessories. It's two systems in one. So Wii U is a NEW system and doesn't require a Wii whatsoever.

The Wii U and The Wii are pretty much two whole different consoles, you can put discs into the Wii U just like you do in the Wii you have as of right now

The others are correct, the wii u is a console just like the wii, except with a game pad controller and better graphics. So you can sell your wii, you won't need it since the wii u plays both wii and wii u discs. However, you may want to ask your dad to wait to sell your wii until after you get the wii u, because you can transfer your save files and any virtual console games you've downloaded from your wii to your wii u. It's a one-time transfer, then you can sell the wii. But don't sell your wii remotes because you'll need those with the wii u for any multiplayer games.

The Wii U IS NOT JUST A CONTROLLER. Nintendo just hasn't been marketing it very well. It is a WHOLE NEW system. The Wii U is the console, and that tablet thing is just... the controller. The console takes discs just like the first Wii. You can see the NEW console (the new wii) here: So yeah, the Wii U is a whole new Wii. You do not need your old wii, but you can not sell it until you get the Wii U. You need BOTH of them to move your games from your wii to the wii U. If you get rid of your Wii you will loose all the saved games you have on it. You need BOTH together to move the data.
