At the big car dealer auctions, individuals cannot buy cars. At the local consumer auto auctions, the cars are generally worn out. You take your chances because you don't get to drive the car or make any serious inspection.

Many of the biggest auctions are dealer only. Auctions open to the public advertise that fact. They typically have shoddy cars and while the prices might seem low, its no bargain if you buy a car with a bad transmission that you didn't know about. Testdrive any car before buying at auction. Auctioneers work for the seller and oftentimes clueless bidders are bidding against phantom bidders.

You need to REGISTER with the auctioneer, to do that you will need a pocketful of cash or a letter of credit from your bank.
