World War II brought the house-of-cards known as Imperialism crashing down. The Soviet Block was sort of a neo-Imperialistic Empire, but it has crashed too. Today there are economic Empires that resemble Imperialism, but no overt Imperial structures left. In today's world it is unlikely we are going to see the kind of International Imperialist structure (one country occupying and governing another) that was common from the seventeenth to the mid twentieth-century. That isn't to say a hundred years from now things might not change....

The US has adopted a policy in the middle east and central Asia of never fully removing its forces from any country where it has previously had a military presence.

See the current USA wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan - USA imperialism is bankrupting the country.
