To answer your first question - yes, they will buy your car without buying theirs. However, I would be prepared for them to give you some strong pressure to buy a car from them. Them partnering with autotrader to offer this service is an investment that they are banking will increase their sales of cars on the lot. They will 'evaluate' the car and give you a 'fair market trade-in value'. Basically will be the lowest amount they can get away with that you will accept. There are disclaimers all over the autotrader offer that say your car will be worth more or less depending on condition and the amount of reconditioning that needs to go into it. Rarely do they pay more. The only exception would be if you have a vehicle in truly excellent condition or one that is in very high demand that they don't have.

Depends on the dealer how old you car is. Some used car dealers only sell late model cars and aren't interested in older cars with lots of miles. Other smaller dealers specialize in selling older cars. However, you can't depend on the value you found on Autotrader, since it was based on nothing more than your description of your car and its condition. I could describe my old beat-up Honda as a beautiful Mercedes and get a value on Autotrader, but that's not what a dealer is going to pay for my Honda.

The estimate from AutoTrader is not a guaranteed contract to buy the car nor is the price a guarantee. It is nothing more than an estimate of the cars value and a list of dealers who are actively buying cars. AutoTrader does not buy the car nor do they negotiate prices. All they do is provide you with information to make an informed decision.
