VPN's won't full ghost you from the National Security Agency. If you're looking to browse anonymously, I would recommend using the TOR browser. In that matter, I wouldn't even recommend using Avast, or any other Anti-Virus software.

Avast is of German origin where the laws of data privacy are usually pro-user and establishment-neutral. So there "might" be some worth-looking-into about their claims. But when it comes to staying invisible online, TOR or a highly encrypted VPN is what usually works. They too lead back to anonymous servers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland among other European nations. In effect, by keeping their web servers in a non-US country, chances of data interception and spying are minimized if not totally eliminated. That said, there are always "loopholes" and workarounds that the NSA can use.
