Here's the answer. Size doesn't matter. Which one did you like best? Pick that one. What we prefer means nothing to you. Guitars are a very personal and intimate thing. Some guys like big booties...some like em tiny....Get my drift? What felt the best in your hands and sounded good is the one for you. And if the guitar you play there is nice, take THAT display model home with you, unless it's bashed up or something. The only time I bought a "boxed" guitar, I regretted it and sold it soon after at a huge loss. I've always taken home the exact guitar I tried out. They all have their own personalities even if they are the same model and brand. I like Ovation guitars, I don't care if they are shaped funny. Or are not a Martin. I just love the feel of them in my hands. So that's what I would buy this time if I buy another acoustic. But, if you like the Taylor over the affordable Martin then get the Taylor. No one here will say anything against that. It's YOUR guitar. You ask 10 experts here and they will all have a different brand they prefer.

The opinions on "Best $500 Guitar" could go on forever. Pick what YOU like - both guitars are fine - if you like "bright" go with the Taylor.

Go with the Martin DXMAE because of projection and tonal qualities.

Your best bet by far is a low end Eastman and they have several in your price range. At the moment there's no better bargain out there. I don't understand why you'd want to get an undersize guitar with its undersize sound nor am I a great enthusiast of dreadnoughts. Take a look at the Eastman AC-222.

Russell's advice is solid, but I'd sure check out Mikey's rec on the Eastmans, as he's On this stuff, Always good to 'catch a wave... Sorry, couldn't 'hep myself...
