On paper Haig was the best general in the British Army, but his decisions in battle were totally ineffective. There was no way to predict this and no way to explain it.

I wouldn't call Haig incompetent. Hidebound and stuck in another era, but not incompetent.

General Haig was not incompetent he certainty knew how to build and organise a army but he was unwilling to realise that warfare had radically changed the politicians were also unwilling to see that warfare had changed
