Anything by Andrew Marr, Mary Beard, Ruth Goodman perhaps? Also the Horrible Histories series for kids! Well recommended!

It depends upon which area of history you wish to read about. There are plenty of books on Chinese history one can read and the best way to obtain a good list is ask the local university (college) historian in the particular area you are after. As for Southeast Asia and the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War, again there are plenty. I would suggest the following as a few -- "In search of Southeast Asia", edited by Dr. David Chandler "History of Southeast Asia", by D.G. H. Hall. "From Vietnam to Baghdad" by Peter Arnett. (That is an autobiography). If you wish to study Cambodia -- then I suggest all the books written by David Chandler. Ben Kiernan, Elizabeth Becker and others.
