It's his phone because he's paying for it and you're a minor and he's responsible for you. He's making sure you're not talking to some guy you don't know, who's a pedo. Your dad is just looking out for you. Since you have nothing to hide, it shouldn't be a problem.

He has every right if his paying for it but your friends are right on the invasion of privacy. He most likely feels like he can't trust you and does these things accordingly. Don't stress it too much if you have nothing to hide. Eventually he'll stop or you'll turn eighteen and then you can tell him no. For now try not to mind it.

Is he allowed? As a Parent of a Minor, yes. Is it an invasion of privacy? Yes. But he won't be able to do it two years from now.

It is NOT invasion of privacy, at 16 you have NO privacy. He can do whatever he wants.
