For one-large, I would cruise good music shops that have a full spread of both new and used instruments, including those on "consignment", the sort of place where working musicians go to, and play a lot of guitars until I found the One, or decided it just wasn't happening and take a break for a few months. If not able to tell the difference between pretty and great, I wouldn't go in the first place, as I wouldn't need that quality. Personally, I'd look for a Martin first, Gibson last (and ignore Fender). If I found the One, then it's "haggling" a bit on the price, somewhat like buying a car or even a house. I will always "low ball" an offer, just "testing", but best to have the cash in case of a nice "surprise". But if, in the cold light of day, the thing is the One, and very much so, it may not sit there long at a good price... So you pays your money and you takes your choice. After all these years, I really feel that I've never fully used the potential of the best guitars I've owned, even some fairly inexpensive imports that others might sneer at. Fine quality stuff is indeed a joy, but it never made me any more money when I had it, and was way more stressful to worry about...

Your best bet is to go on ebay. That is the best bang for your money and you have a very wide selection of instrument. You can also bargain with the seller and your purchase is always guaranteed when you pay via paypal.

In your price range the best value by far is Eastman guitars. They're difficult to find although their web site has a dealer locator, but they're well worth the effort. In my opinion, Gibson acoustics are simply awful; I've played lots of them and they're consistently mediocre and overpriced.
