Don't let her take advantage of your inexperience. You're going to have to be very strong to raise a teenager by yourself. She'll use every trick in the book, including guilt and sorrow to get around your rules. Ask her if her mother spanked her and if she did, what did your niece do to deserve such a severe reaction? And make rules and stick to them. You're going to have to be a bit of a hard a$$ but it will be worth it. Keep an eye on her especially when she starts begging to date. Don't let her wriggle out of things either. Tell you no you won't strike her, you'll just call children and family services and let her end up in foster care. Get your bluff in early. My mother told me she and my father bluffed us all when we were kids. We believed them too and ended up independent, and strong. My mom told me this when I was 40. I laughed big time!

Some advice, leave it in God's hands. Get her into youth group at church . keep her involved with their activities. Sit down weekly and have a bible study with her, go through his word, listen to Air1 (90.1) on the radio when you are on the car or worship music (hillsong united, chris tomlin) i say this so that you can start exposing her to Christianity and so God can bless her at a young age, she will mess up now and then shes only human. But my sister is also 13 we became Christians about 3 years ago and the more we let God have over our life the better things get. Don't say here are the rules, say "this is what i expect from you". Just so she doesn't seem you are trying to overwhelm her with rules , rules, rules. I will keep you in my prayers. May God have his hand over your situation. He is so mighty and wonderful and he is allowing her to come into your life for a reason.
