It sounds like the battery is old and tired and don't want to crank out the amps anymore. If it was the starter solenoid getting stuck (not engaging) then you wouldn't also lose volatile memory (trip meter) but you did lose trip readings which suggests the battery gave its all in an effort to crank the motor. The chugging cannot be battery related UNLESS the battery is so completely dead that it affects ignition as it draws most of the alternator output and leaves less for the ignition system. IMO, a new battery is the first step to take.
