take x=2 and y=3 plug in and the ratio is 12:19

Well, be cautious with asimov's answer because : x/y = 2/3 does not mean x = 2 and y = 3 what asimov is not saying...; but he nevertheless writes : take x = 2 and y = 3 ... and it works, but only because the expression is made the way it is. so it more details, it gives : if x/y = 2/3 then we have : deviding by y on nominator and denominator (3x+2y) / (2x+5y) = (3 (x/y) + 2) / (2 (x/y) + 5) so (3x+2y) / (2x+5y) = (3 . 2/3 + 2) / (2 . 2/3 + 5) (3x+2y) / (2x+5y) = (3 . 2/3 + 2) / (2 . 2/3 + 5) times 3 on nominator and denominator (3x+2y) / (2x+5y) = (3 . 2 + 2 . 3) / (2 . 2 + 5 . 3) finally: (3x+2y) / (2x+5y) = 12/19 hope it' ll help !!
