We eat food to keep living and we like how it taste because it can be sweet or salty sometimes. Not true. Just because something is edible, doesn't mean it will taste good.

So to start with we need to eat food for the nutritional aspects, and for the calories necessary to fuel our bodies. So that should answer the last question, but to put it in context, there's the laws of 3's. Death normally will occur when starved of oxygen for 3 minutes, water for 3 days, and food for 3 weeks. Taste buds have developed over time to help us determine whether what we are eating is good enough to eat or not. Food that is rotten will not taste good and our tastes can help determine that, and save us from food poisoning. That is limited though, obviously. Food isn't just enjoyed though because of flavor. Texture, smell, temperature, and even fat content can play a role in the enjoyment level.
