It isn't yet fully understood. Take a look at stem cell research. Stem cells are so much in the news because understanding how they work is going to open up a lot of things like synthesis of human hearts for transplant. A stem cell has the potential to develop into any kind of tissue, but the full details aren't yet understood.

the body is made up of cells they all have special qualities to their particular functions it's their job basically to repair grow in an environment brain cells operate in the brain etc there is a super cell that can function in any of these environments these are stem cells but ordinary cells have a particular function and they stick to it
