India is a land of diversity, we follow different religions , hinduism is one of them , according to hindu mythology, the brahmans and vaishnavs do not consume meat inc egg . Keeping mythology and religion aside its a matter of choice these days in india and among indians . for eg many of my brahman friends consume meat like feast similarly few of my friends who are non brahmans or vaishnavs donot consue meat at all.

That's depends upon their wish and also family situations. And their principle of JEEVA KARUNYA. But there is not restrictions in eating. Many eat to live to gain energy only. Some intrested in veg, some in non veg. Do you know other religious people also have this diversity?
