Here's a truth: People are paid what they will accept. We have no involuntary servitude or slavery in most of the free world. If you don't like the pay, don't take the job. If you want others to make more money, give them some of yours.

1. It is a job traditionally held by women and women are expected to put up with low paying jobs. 2. Our society does not view working with young children as teaching, no matter what credentials and training the adults have. You are viewed as a babysitter. 3.Women in child care have not been nearly vocal enough about needing more respect and higher salaries. 4. If child care and early childhood folks were paid what they should be the cost of childcare would be out of almost anyone's reach and our government has shown no inclination to subsidize care for all children. The emphasis on PreK coming out of Washington will probably make this worse.

I would say a lot of childcare facilities take in "welfare" or below poverty children. The state or government will only pay the facilities , so much money a month to watch a child. I know a women who started her own licensed daycare. She makes extra income by taking in adults with disabilities also. The state will pay her to watch an adult with a disability and she also runs a daycare for the children in her home. Don't worry the adult with a disability is not usually home when the children are around.
