Thunderstone has had a couple of versions, you're right, but they're somewhat compatible(you can buy an Upgrade Kit if you have the original game and want to play with your old cards). The new version is Thunderstone Advance and it's very streamlined compared to the original, which is nice. The "Starter" set for Tunderstone Advance is "Towers Of Ruin" and it introduces the new system which was streamlined from the original game. Thunderstone Advance: Numenera is a new Starter Set that can be used as a stand alone game or mixed with the other Thunderstone Advance games. So if you buy Numenera alone you're fine, it'll teach you how to play the game and it'll have enough cards to play the game by itself. The sets that you can't play without the expansions are Caverns of Bane and Root Of Corruption. You need a Starter Set at least to play with those, they introduce new ideas to gameplay and stronger monsters.
