July 25th 1814 by George Stephenson - inventor of the first steam locomotive engine for railroads.

On 21 February 1804 the world's first locomotive-hauled railway journey took place as Trevithick's unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren Ironworks, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

many have given correct answer but been thumbed down.? . the question was not when did first train with carriages or freight get pulled but when was it built. As such Stephensons 'rocket' is established as the worlds first fully workable steam engine.
