Potential energy can be in an inactive object I.g. Basketball. Kinetic Energy is faster you go the more energy is produced.

Think of it like this: kinetic energy energy is a ball in motion. Potential is the ball that could move. You have potential energy when you are sitting down because you could stand up. When you stand up and move around, that is kinetic energy. Something in motion stays in motion! Hope it helped :)

Potential is the of storing it while kinetic is using it. Think of the hydroelectric Dam. The water behind it has the Potential , whole the water rushing through the turbines is the Kinetic.
