If you want to maximize the likelihood to build a long term retirement fund then you will prefer stocks. If you want to have a higher probability of short term interest income then you prefer bonds.

On a risk scale of 1 - 10, stocks are 6 -10 and bonds are 1- 5. So the question is, How much risk do you want to take? Most advisers will say a mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds is the best way to go.
