You need the core rules to start with. Not sure if they come in the dark vengeance box. You will need a codex for whatever army you're playing. Most of all you will need a LOT of money and time and access to people with similar interests and resources. WH40K is one of the most expensive hobbies in boardgaming and one of the more expensive ones in geek culture. The game was ways of making you pay as time goes on.

You are off to a good start. Dark Vengeance comes with two starter armies and a rulebook. If you like the Dark Angels or Chaos Marines, then you just need to add a few minis to get up to a full size army. If you want to go with one of the (many) other armies available, you will need to buy the whole thing. I recommend getting the basics of an army first: a commander and two troops choices (usually the basic soldier for that faction). If you decide that is not the army for you, you can always use them as allies. Regardless of which army you choose, you WILL need the Codex with their individual rules. Without it, you won't know what your forces are capable of. Other than that, a tape measure is handy. Terrain for the battlefield is always good, but not strictly necessary. Welcome to the hobby!
