Pretty much every culture had a color "orange" before they ever SAW or had an orange fruit.

The 'orange' fruit possibly got its English name from Spanish ('naranja') and they almost certainly got the name from Arabic ('naranj'). We eventually lost the initial "n". The fruit certainly existed before the 'name' of the color. Most oranges in the world are actually GREEN so there's not a lot of connection between the fruit and the color.
