What color is the smoke, black or white? If black, could be the fuel mixture needs adjusted, or the choke setting needs adjusted. If white, could be bad valve guide seals leaking oil into the cylinders and when you start it the oil burns and makes the white smoke. It will do this for a little bit and then once the oil is burned out, you won't see the white smoke again until you let it set for a while. If you are having to put oil in it more often than normal, it is most like the guide seals.
