It does hurt to apply for more cards. Even if you don't get the card, just the fact that you applied for it hurts.

If you have a reasonable chance of getting it, go for it. A person should always have 2 cards, just in case .... and do not worry about any ding to your credit score.

Depends whether you plan on using credit for anything significant in the next 12 months (like mortgage or vehicle loan). If so, try and avoid it until that's finished. Otherwise, it's just fine, but keep in mind that your credit score will be adjusted based on how much total credit you have available to you, and how much of a balance you have compared with that available credit. More important than any of this (by far), is to pay off your credit cards in full EVERY month, and have an emergency fund of at least $1000 or so to weather any financial storms.
