Whenever I go to 'secure' servers (those which show "https" as the address prefix), my Firefox has a padlock in the position you describe. Clicking that gives details about the connection; and the 'Certificate' that the site has. Have you ticked that triangle? (And what was the result?) And: What browser are you using? (Try again on one of the sites you mentioned.)
