It's not expected to tell your current employer that you're looking for another job. But a two week notice before leaving is the norm.

most people do not advise their employer tht they are looking for another job, however, they do advise their current employer that they may receive a reference call as you have left an application for additional work.

Don't test your boss. They might not even check references if a friend recommended you. Those sort of places are used to high turnover and unlikely to be phased by a reference call.

No absolutely don't give them a heads up. Just put them on the resume and your good you don't owe it to anybody to tell them what your doing.
