BUT TO THE READER, the time line is clear: first event in the sentence happened in 1524 followed by the second event in the sentence, in 1914. Hence, both verbs in Simple Past Tense. "... use chemical signals... and these signals repel..." 'also' = in addition TO. (So, in addition TO.....what???) 'also' is syntactically wrong.
