It could be a sign that you have had a lot of iron but I don't think it means pre-menopause, unless you have other serious health issues.

it can be due to perimenopause, it can also be due to a million other things such as miscarriage, medications, there are instances that changes in blood color might be an indication of damage in one of the internal parts. Some brown or black discharges may be caused by erosion, rupture of a cyst in the uterus, or injury in the surface of the uterus, infections, ruptured cysts, cancers or just plain old blood that has not been expelled previously, there are just too many things to list them all. and FYI perimenopause is a normal part of aging, it happens to all women and you do not need "serious health issues" to be in perimenopause.
