on the application, did he put he makes $1,000 plus a month? he needed to be more accurate, and show proof that he has been making this for at least 6 months or 1 full year. you don't need credit,,, you just need stable income and proof of it. if he is only making 1,000 or a bit more a month, that is not enough for any apartment (not for 2 to 3 people to live on).

If you're sub-leasing make sure the person you're sub-leasing from has the authority to sub-lease. In other words does his lease allow him to sub-lease. Ask to see a copy of his lease and/or ask for a letter from his landlord indicating sub-leasing is permitted.

Yes, your deposit would be returned. Hopefully they will not bother with an application fee, as you will be denied if rent is over 300 a month. Your income is too low to afford more then that, and most will not even take you at 300 since it is a new job.
