The fuel pump may have ceased pumping. Running any vehicle with an in-tank fuel pump low on gas on a regular basis will eventually burn up the pump as the gas surrounding it actually helps keep the pump cool. And if the car has the original fuel pump still in it, it's 13 years old and could have died from old age. Also the fuel pump relay could be bad as well so swap that one with another of the same type from a different position in the underhood relay center and see if that helps. Do a fuel pressure test at the fuel rail to determine if you're getting fuel to the cylinders, if pressure is adequate proceed to the cam and crank sensors to determine if they are functioning.
