You would be burning oil if the piston rings were bad, not leaking. So you're in the clear of that. Sounds like you might need a new oil pan gasket (or as y'all say on the other side of the pond, "oil sump"), and if it's all bent out of shape, it wouldn't hurt for you to replace it. It also wouldn't hurt for you to make sure the drain plug (or sump plug) is tight, but don't over-tighten it. If I were you, since you don't seem to mechanically inclined, have a technician check for other leaks while you're at it. No telling what all needs to be replaced on a 15 year old car.
