You owe the money to the Customs Service, not FedEx. You won't get your package until you pay. After some period, the item will be sold at auction to collect taxes. Talk to your local FedEx and ask what their policy is.

FedEx will generally give you terms of 30 days, but they do not like to wait around for collecting so they generally give it to a collections agency pretty quick. i know i disregarded an invoice from fedex for $16.00 in GST and within a few weeks already had a collections letter. even if it goes to collections, if it is a small amount i would not worry too much, but try and get it paid as soon as possible. Alternatively, using a third party broker, you can negotiate your own terms with them - FedEx will not negotiate
