The real fact is it might hurt your chances! You have to understand there is the "right way" , "the wrong way", and " the military way"! The military always likes you to learn "the military way" as other training could keep you from learning "their way"! The Air Force Academy offers you the best chance if you can get the appointment!

NO, it won't. IF the military wants you to fly THEIR airplanes, THEY will teach you the way THEY want you to do it. Starting out with a private pilot's license may actually be a negative factor, as their instructors will have to UN-TRAIN any bad habits you may have learned.

Do not worry too much. Get good grades and be physically fit. The Navy and the Air Force have their own way of selecting who will make it to pilot school. If you are selected for pilot training, they will pay to get your PPL before the formal training.
